Colleges in Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids has the advantage of not being too big or too small, too hot or too cold--something of a Goldilocks place. At just under 200,000 people, it's large enough to support a thriving business and community life: there's plenty to do and there should be no problems in getting an off campus job to support your studies. The climate is better than that of much of the Midwest, not so cold in the winter and not so hot in the summer: the city's weather is moderated by the nearby Great Lakes. Perhaps the greatest advantage is the number of universities and colleges in the city. At least ten institutions make their home just inside the city. This means a lot of students in the area, leading to a thriving and vibrant social and extracurricular scene. It's important to remember these things as college offers more than just the book learning.

A Little About Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids is the second largest city in the state and has long been a center for furniture and automobile manufacturing.

During the second half of the 19th century the city became a major lumbering center and the premier furniture manufacturing city of the United States. After an 1876 international exhibition held in Philadelphia, Grand Rapids gained worldwide recognition as "Furniture City". Today, Grand Rapids is considered a world leader in the production of office furniture

In addition to furniture, Grand Rapids is a major supplier to the automotive industry with such companies as Adac Plastics, Benteler Industries, Lacks Enterprises, Lear Corporation, and Meridian Automotive Systems.
